The following exercises were carried out during the
year, -
1. positive chemical exposure assessments by
independent industrial hygiene consultant were
conducted for oil palm estates, palm oil mills,
SP Lab and Seed Production Unit. There was no
major nonconformity reported by the assessor,
2. chemical hazard risk assessments by independent
industrial hygiene consultant were carried out
for new estates in Central Region. There was no
major nonconformity reported,
3. employees handling hazardous laboratory
chemicals and pesticides were sent for medical
examinations,
4. audiometric examinations for mill employees
were conducted,
5. quarterly environmental monitoring and other
assessments were carried out in order to comply
with the relevant environmental regulations,
6. continual inspections and assessments by HSE
Departments on work processes and facilities,
and
7. monitoring of HSE compliance for projects
undertaken by the Group.
Sound and effective HSE risk management will be
continued and improved further in order to fully
support the Group’s business targets for higher
productivity and sustainable operation.
Quality Assurance & Product
Improvement
The Group places great emphasis on the quality
of the oil palm products that it produces and
maintains coordination and co-operation between
the estates and the mills to achieve common targets
for the year and imposes strict FFB grading on
external crops.
Both Mukah and Niah Mills target to be certified
for ISO 9001:2008 (Quality Management System)
and ISO 14001:2008 (Environmental Management
System) in 2015. These management systems will
enhance quality assurance of mill operations and
products once they are fully in place.
Health, Safety and Environment
The Board and Management of SPB Group always
place high priority on health, safety and environment
(HSE) matters in all operational activities and business
ventures. This is not only to ensure that the legislative
requirements are fully complied with but also to
ensure sustainable operations through appropriate
and proper identification, management and control of
HSE risks.
